Can I Get GLP-1 Medication Without Diabetes?

Yes. You do not need to have diabetes to qualify for a GLP-1 weight-loss medication. Semaglutide, sold as Wegovy, and tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound, are specifically approved for weight management in adults who have obesity, or who carry excess weight along with a related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea. A provider confirms you are a good candidate.

This is one of the most common points of confusion I hear, and it makes sense. In my more than 20 years in medicine, the mix-up almost always comes from the brand names, so let me clear it up.

The same medications go by different names depending on what they are approved to treat. Ozempic and Mounjaro are the versions approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy and Zepbound are the exact same medicines approved specifically for weight management in people without diabetes. So the drug that helps with weight loss is the same one, just cleared and dosed for that purpose.

Who qualifies generally comes down to your weight and your health. As a rule of thumb, these medications are approved for adults with a body mass index of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher when paired with a weight-related condition. Just as important, a physician checks that they are safe for you and rules out the situations where they are not a good fit.

I want to say this plainly, too: needing help with weight is a medical matter, not a personal failing. Excess weight drives real health risks, and treating it with an effective, monitored medication is a legitimate and often smart choice.
